Thema: New larger tires for Smart Roadster-Coupe

Pitrojohn - 23.2.2015 um 15:24

Hallo everyone,
I just moved to Germany (I am learning German but still not so good to communicate) and I want to change my tires. I have 1 issue:

My stock tires are 205/50 R15. I want to change my front tires with 205/55 R15 and my rear with 225/50 R15. I have found tires in this size (only summer ones though...). The overall diameter is the same front and back for these sizes but it is 3% larger than my original tires. Sizewise they fit inside the fenders but do you know if the ESP light will go on when the overall diameter is larger on all tires? Or the light goes on only when the diameter is different between the front and back tires? (this is what my research found so far).

Thank you for you response, you will help me out.
Vielen Dank!

I edited my post cause I found that there are winter tires for 205/50 R15 and 205/55 R15 but not for 225/50 R15....

Hi,

The light will most presumably go on at the Hauptuntersuchung. In germany, one may not simply change the tyre dimensions without the corresponding administrative games.

For the technical part this is certainly not much of a help. But i believe that the ESP will have considerable problems if it recognizes different speeds between the axles. If diameters at both axles are increasing equally, there should not be a problem ESP-wise, but the speedo must not show a wrong speed that is lower than the actual speed.

Hi Dude,
Thanks for your reply. If I change them to the proposed tire dimensions (205/55 R15 and 225/50 R15) both axles will have the same diameter so I also hope that it will be ok with the ESP. Concerning the speed, my speedometer will show 2-3 km less than the actual speed depending on how fast I drive.
Well now I just need to see if I could change them in the summer to a dealer who would be ok with it I don't think it will create a problem to the car or its behaviour...
Gruß

Keep in mind to make that setup legal, you may lose your insurance coverage.
